The Butterfly Project

He is 75 years old and an American Christian. He stood before me, not bothering to choke back tears, explaining his visit to the holocaust museum while in the Holy Land. I listened and thought how could, weeks after returning, this still be so emotional. I understand now.

I converted to Judaism recently. During, but not part of my conversion process, my fiancé-now-husband and I visited some of the first synagogues in the Southeast. I also, finally, visited the national Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC.  I didn’t visit while I lived there because it was not an experience I wanted to have by myself.

No words can describe the impact such a place has on a person who with the capacity to understand it. Honestly, there were some exhibits I avoided. I realized when I walked through a train car I wasn’t going to be able to complete the museum without sobbing. And, do you know, I felt ashamed for wanting to cry.

I don’t remember at what point I finally forgot my shame and buried myself in my hunny’s arms, struggling to control my sobbing. I felt like I didn’t have the right to feel the sorrow that had overcome me.( In retrospect, any human untouched by it – isn’t paying attention. It is devastation.)  I just wanted out of there. It was at this point I started skipping portions.

I couldn’t bring myself to examine the model of the crematorium housed in replicated portions of Auschwitz. There was display after display of clothes and other personal items, glasses, briefcases, shoes which belonged to the victims. It personalized everything.  The desecrated Torah from the Night of Broken Glass – desecrated only because it is the Jewish Holy Book. The first picture you see when you enter the exhibit is clothed soldiers standing over a mass grave of slaughtered emaciated Jews. It’s an overwhelming exhibition – to even call it an exhibition diminishes the horror. It is an overwhelming moment in history.

The “silent” victims of the Holocaust are children. Displayed in the museum are children’s drawings. Understanding a little about what children communicate in their drawings, I was amazed to see hope portrayed in the ones on display in the main exhibit. The resilience of children and a parent’s ability to instill hope are evident in those drawings. However, the fact remains 1.5 million CHILDREN died in the Holocaust.

I stumbled upon a project—The Butterfly Project http://www.hmh.org/ed_butterfly1.shtml . The Huston Holocaust Museum has initiated a project to collect 1.5 million butterflies for an exhibit to recognize the death of the children. The museum has collected around 900,000 butterflies to date. The closing date for this project is December 31, 2012. The exhibition is scheduled for Spring 2014. All are invited to participate.  The Butterfly Project is based on a poem written by Pavel Friedman (b. 1921 –d. Auschwitz 1944.)

If you have ever been the victim of a bully because of how you look, your religion, your race or your hair color  — if you have ever experienced discrimination at work because of your family situation, your sex or your value system – if you have ever felt oppressed or singled out by your weight, your height, your ethnicity or your accent – I encourage you to participate. Become aware of how easily hate grows. Become aware of what people do because of hate in the name of some other value. Become aware that it can start with something as simple as hair and eye color. Become aware and speak up.

Rockets out of Gaza

A few days ago terrorists from the Gaza Strip (Palestinian territory) into Israel. It’s been going on for about three days now. The closest the rockets have come to us is about 30 miles (give or take). I see Israel as a parent with good boundaries and consistency interacting with a temperamental and irrational child.  Bottom line: “If you do this misbehavior – so and so will  happen. I have told you about these consequences before and now I am following through.”  Israel hasn’t “really” returned the “aggression” yet. They have just taken out some of the terrorist cells, consequently some Palestinian civilians were injured. Please don’t believe what the popular media is saying. The Jihad radicals started this and Israel is being protective.  By the way if you really want to know what’s happening here – don’t watch Fox or CNN – read http://www.ynetnews.com

The Home Front Command reiterated its directive barring any mass gatherings of over 500 people within a 7-40km radius of the Gaza border.

The IDF advised the area’s residents to remain close to shelters and abide by security forces’ orders.

In accordance with the Home Front Command recommendations, IDF soldiers sent to reinforce the Gaza division troops, have begun escorting school buses in the Gaza vicinity communities, in order to help guide the children in case a Red Color alert is sounded.

‘IDF targeting top Jihadists’

Palestinian sources reported two IAF strikes in the Strip’s north and south, causing 35 civilian casualties.

According to one report, an operative with the al-Quds Brigades, the Islamic Jihad’s military wing, was killed in one of the strikes.

Palestinian sources said that one of the strikes caused a three-story building in the northern Gaza neighborhood of Jabalya to collapse, injuring 17 people. Palestinian search and rescue services were reportedly on the scene and the injured were rushed to Gaza’s Kamal Aduan hospital.

A second strike was reported in the central Gaza Strip neighborhood of Sajaiya, injuring three people.

Palestinian sources reported that a 17-year-old student Tamar Nabil Azzam, was killed in an IAF strike in northwest Gaza.

A spokesman for the Islamic Jihad said that the IDF was trying to target top operatives, but to no avail.

Islamic Jihad Deputy Secretary-General Ziad a-Nahala denied Monday reports suggesting Egypt was negotiating a ceasefire with Gaza’s militant groups.

“Israel is the aggressor and so it has to half fire first. After that, we will assess the situation and decide on a ceasefire,” he said.

A-Nahala added that the Islamic Jihad has informed Cairo that it opposes any ceasefire with Israel.

Meanwhile, Riyad Mansour, the PLO’s observer to the United Nations, filed a grievance over Israel’s “aggression” with the Security Council, the UN General Assembly and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Mansour denounced “Israel’s bloody brutality and terrorist acts against the Palestinian people,” and urged a UN condemnation.

Extremists in Every Religion

SOMETIMES EVERYTHING YOU DO TO BE HOLY CAN BE UNDONE IN AN INSTANT.

The Jews believe you gain holiness by obeying all the mitzvot (laws). Holiness (being set apart)  has to do with the intent and process of what it takes to fulfill the law. You can perform the mitzvot as routine. You can perform it as habit without thought to the intent and purpose of it. This is still okay because it will bring you closer to holiness. So whether it is just going through the motions or you are full of intention and focus you are working toward holiness.

Now, the Jews, ultra-orthodox, in this video believe they are more holy than most because of their strict adherence to all the mitzvah. As the gentleman stated, they are healthy, we, meaning not them, are sick.

Additionally, I’d like to point out this as evidence that there are extremists in every religion. They are not all terrorist of the type that blow up buildings. Some just cause terror to those in their neighborhood with extreme behavior.

There is one other point I’d like to bring to your attention. This little girl is very modestly dressed. Can you imagine what they would do if they saw some of the way not-so-modest little girls in the US dress? Even though I don’t agree with dressing your daughter or yourself like a hoochie mama – the thought is terrifying!

Sunday, December 25 2011|Ami Kaufman

Since this news report last Friday, about a little girl from Beit Shemesh, secular-religious relations seem to be the only thing Israelis are talking about
Naama Margolis, an 8-year-old from Bet Shemesh, is the most famous girl in Israel today. In fact, nobody can stop talking about her.

And why is that? Well, on Friday evening, Naama told her story on the most watched news show in the country. Interviewed by Channel 2’s Shai Gal, Naama told how she was afraid to go to school, just a few hundred meters from her house in Bet Shemesh, because Haredim cursed and spit on her for being dressed “immodestly.”

The report, translated in full below, has sent Israeli public discourse on relations between secular and religious into a frenzy.

Since the report, the Israeli Prime Minister has spoken about it, the Haredi Beit Shemesh Mayor has condemned it, Haredim in Beit Shemesh attacked a Channel 2 news team who came to town again on Sunday, and rioted when municipal workers took down signs calling for segregation between men and women. They later put the signs back up. Today, the city announced plans to put up 400 security cameras.

But guess who hasn’t said anything? That’s right: the rabbis. Apparently, they don’t care. And why should they? It’s not like they recognize the state or anything. And guess what else: They don’t have to. Because the invalid who spoke from inside his car at the end of the item is actually right. Out of all the ignorance he spewed, he managed to say one correct thing at the end:

“All of Israel will be Haredi, and there’s nothing you can do about it.”

He’s right. The numbers speak for themselves.

Actually, it makes the whole two-state, one-state discussion seem like a waste of time. What does it matter when in a few decades between the river and the sea, secular people of any nationality will be a small minority.

You’ll just have to chose your theocracy.

This is an ultra orthodox Jewish woman. Reminds me of the modest dress required by Islam. (Photo Source: http://www.examiner.com)
